Assuming you have, or are about to land an Overwater ...
@bassymcbassface Ah, same thing then 🙂
LOL - sorry. Having had a bit of a read up on these things, it looks like the Progress was a bit like a thru-neck version of the bolt-on Perception (excepting the other differences you mentioned). The description of the Progress IV seems to suggest they've introduced a bolt-on Progress, and dropped the Perception, to make things simpler.
Thanks for the other advice; I'll bear it in mind but, as I can't really afford/justify the cost of a new Overwater, I'll probably just have to put up with what I can find used! Saying that, the basic requirement is something of similar proportions to my Dean, so we'll see.
@bassymcbassface Do you mean here - https://www.facebook.com/groups/4888919827/? Yes, I'm on there. There don't seem to be many going at the moment; there is one 20th anniversary 5-string Progress, which is tempting. I've chatted to the owner about it but the price he's looking for is a little more than I'd like to pay for that finish, certainly at this point in time (as I've only started looking).
Essentially it needs to be a Progress 5-string with a thru-neck 🙂 Preferably with the 5-layer laminate neck, but I may have to compromise on that!
@bassymcbassface No problem; I appreciate the help. FWIW - it's also £3k, which is above my budget.
TBH, I may be wrong about being able to afford one (well, I say "able to afford one", but I kind of really mean "able to justify spending that much on one"). As I mentioned, I've only really started looking and I've seen very few advertised, but the first couple (that had already been sold) looked like they were in my price range; maybe they weren't indicative of the true value though.
For that specific one though, if I was thinking of shelling out that much, I'd probably be considering adding the extra for a brand new one rather than a 10yr old one!
We'll see.... 🙂
Have you considered a "Tanglewater"?
I tried one out in "Guitar Works" in Reading (now defunct) many years ago, and as an owner of a custom Overwater, I thought the quality was pretty close. I think these come up for sale on Ebay etc, but worth considering?
@louisl1963 No. Thanks for mentioning it but, from a mental point of view (that's not really the right word, but...), I'd always be conscious that it's not 'real' if you know what I mean. Also, I like the thru-neck idea and already have one on my current bass (Dean Edge Pro 5-String).
