Guitar hangers; good idea?
One of my rooms has a nice little space where I could possibly hang one of my basses, which would be pretty convenient. What's the general consensus, if there is one, on whether guitar hangers like the Hercules gsp38wb are good to use? My main concern is what the risk of damage to the guitar's finish is, not only at the nut end, but where the body might bash against the wall or whatever I attach to the wall to make it softer.
Welcome to the forum. Guitar hangers IMHO, are fine for a short-term domicile for our wood and wires. You correctly focus on damage, but remember, even in the cleanest of homes, the demon dust lies. It has an incredible ability to find its way into pots, pickups and strings. I even remember there used to be a company that advertised in Bass Player years ago, specialising in what they called 'bass socks', which were basically a 'sock' which was 'worn' on the bass neck whilst sitting for extended periods on stands.
The obvious answer to your wall-hanging conundrum is quite simple: buy more basses and then nothing needs to be sitting in that hanger for mire than a week at a time. I'd start today, but do not tell her/him/the sheep indoors.
