OW Pickup layout
Hello, I am in the process of having my first custom bass built by Overwater, and it has been an amazing process so far!
Question for those more familiar with OW basses...what sonic differences do you notice between the OW Soapbars, OW Jazz, or OW P-bass pickups?
Currently, I’m looking at building a Progress with Soapbars, but wondering if a P-J layout might be more versatile? Just curious what those of you who have played multiple configurations have noticed.
I am at the same exciting stage as you are, with my first Overwater on order. Obviously, I can’t advise you based on experience. However, I have picked up a few pointers, which I hope may help you to at least a small extent:
1. You will find some demos by searching YouTube for “Bass Buddha Overwater”. These include Progress (soap bar) and Hybrid (jazz pickup) models. Of course, there are many other variables, apart from pickup type.
2. There are quite a few video recordings on the Overwater Facebook site.
3. Just in case you haven’t spotted them (I’d be surprised if you hadn’t) there are some sound samples under the Resources tab above.
4. Chris offered me a choice of forward or backward position for the pickups. I chose forward for a warmer sound. If you have not already discussed that with Chris, then it’s worth asking him about it.
I hope that helps. I would love to hear how you get on and what design choices you make.
Thanks for the feedback! I’ll check out the audio samples for sure.
My build sounds much like yours as it stands now - Progress with Forward positioned soap bars.
Just really intrigued by the reversed P-bass pickups and how they compare to the other configurations.
