My first (and only) custom bass build

Hi all,

My Overwater story began in the summer of 2003. I had attended a couple of summer schools that year; the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Camp at Richmond College, and an ACM Summer School in Guildford. In my time attending both, I met with a couple of guys who had brought custom builds along (by another luthier based in London) and had been impressed with the build quality and thought "maybe it's time to commission a build of my own?". I did a bit of research online, and it was after seeing U.S. bassist Tom Barney playing a 5 string ESP jazz bass with a quilted maple top (with Steely Dan) and seeing a similar bass on the Overwater site that pretty much clinched the deal for me.

I made contact with the guys up in Carlisle in the September, and I specifically wanted one that was part of the portrait gallery in those days - a Blue jazz with a QMT and a Maple neck with Hipshot hardware, and (I think) what may have been one of the early John East preamps. The team talked me through the options in terms of woods and so on, and once the deposit was paid, there wasn't any going back!

6 months later, I was on the train up to Carlisle - there was absolutely no way I was going to have my new pride & joy going through a parcel courier network. I had a very pleasant couple of hours at the shop with Chris and Laurence on that Saturday morning, and it's an event I look back at now as one of my highlights of this century.

16 years later, I still have it and it was gigged as recently as the end of January this year!

Excellent and hello. Just thought I'd give a friendly welcome. Nice bass by the way.

Hi Louis, Nice bass you got there 😉 there seems to be a fondness for the blue J with white plate in the forum.  Will have to get a poll going.

I'm a bit of a fan of black and white, all my instruments are one or the other. Even my acoustic is black with white trim.  Maybe time to get some colour in my life!  There's currently a trans black with a blue tint in the shop... Maybe start small.

Hi Stephen,

You're right - the Blue & White thing does seem a popular combo! If I ever get another J5 (need a lottery win first), it's a toss up between Olympic White with a Rosewood type f/board on a Maple neck, and a Red Tort plate or the same neck on a 3 Tone Sunburst with the Red Tort plate. Body would definitely have to be Swamp Ash as I'm getting on in years!
