Hey folks!

I'm Roger Gardiner based in Liverpool. I play electric and double bass professionally within many different musical genres. My first Overwater was purchased in 2000..blimey, where does twenty years go? It's a seven string with, I believe, the first 38" scale length. This was to accomodate the low string tuning of F#.The bass is a real beauty and it was my main bass for many years. Then, twelve years ago, Chris contacted about a customer who wanted an 8-string version, 38" scale... oh... and it was to be fretless with a low C#. Chris sent me some experimental thick guage strings to see how they would perform with such low tuning. I was surprisingly impressed, so the bass was built. I tried it and thought to myself, "Oh no... this is the best bass ever.. even nicer than my seven string." A few years went by. People at gigs often asked me about my bass (the 7-string)  but I would always tell them about this amazing fretless 8-string that I'd tried. Then, in 2014, the owner contacted me to say he was selling the bass and was I interested? So I'm now the proud owner of two beautiful extended range Overwater basses. Sure, they would not be for everybody, but I love them. There is some footage of me with both basses on Youtube, but don't laugh!

My early influence as a player was Jack Casady (Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna) amongst many others. John Patitucci is a genius, along with Scot Lafaro, Eddie Gomez and the incredible Nils-Henning Oersted-Pedersen. I've nicked a load of stuff from them over the years. By the way, I'm useless at technology, so if anybody tries to contact me, please be patient. My wife has to keep me sorted with all that stuff! Hope everybody is keeping well in these unusual times.

Hi Roger! Welcome to the forum.

Do you have any pics of this mythical 8 string?  I don't think I've ever heard of one, never mind seen one!

This would be you with the 7 string yes? YouTube - Roger Gardiner - 7 String Overwater

Hi Stephen,

Uh oh... yes, that footage is me from just over ten years ago. I have loads of pics of me playing the 8-string, but haven't a clue how to post them. My wife has just sorted this link to a demo of me playing the bass that my son filmed a few years ago. Hope you can access this ok.

Hi Roger,

Welcome!

Was your eight-string ex Kevin Glasgow at all? I seem to remember he had something like that on the go around that time.

enjoyed your you tube clip by the way.  Also agree highly with your bassists of choice.
