It’s always an exciting prospect working on a new model – and I thought it might be an interesting project to follow this process through to where design becomes a physical instrument…

As I tend to take a more ‘old school’ approach to design, for me this starts with an outline sketch with points of reference such as bridge position and the 1st and 2nd octave positions on the scale length. These in turn determine the ‘pivot points’ which dictate the physical balance of the instrument – and from there I can start to work on other aspects of the ergonomics and aesthetics of the body profile…

The bass I’m working on here is a new, shorter scale ‘thin-line’ version of the full depth bass ‘semi acoustic’ we’ve posted photo’s of recently – but this time with a thinner body depth and the addition of a fully adjustable bridge and a pair of magnetic pick-ups.

As, like it’s big brother, this bass will feature a fully ‘carved’ top, the next stage will be more technical and we will be calling on our colleague Haydn Williams to help us with ‘programming’ the 3D profile top.

Watch out for updates as the project progresses…
