Tom McGuire – Lauren Collier – Solas Sounds
Gus Stirrat – Bassist / Studio Engineer / Producer
Glasgow, Scotland
Gus Stirrat is a Glasgow-based bassist, engineer, and producer whose musical life is split between the stage and the studio. As the founder of the recording studio Solas Sound, he’s a key figure in Scotland’s thriving jazz and folk scenes, producing and engineering records across a wide spectrum of genres including jazz, Scottish traditional music, pop, and rock.
He has worked on award-winning and nominated albums by artists such as Fergus McCreadie, Corto.Alto, and Mànran, and has contributed to recordings by Lewis Capaldi, Lana Del Rey, and many others.
As a bassist, Gus plays with a wide range of bands and artists including Tom McGuire & The Brassholes, Blue Rose Code, Celtic Worship, Fat-Suit, Graham Costello’s STRATA, and the Lauren Collier Band, alongside regular session work both live and in the studio. He has toured extensively across the UK, Europe, and further afield with many of these acts.
Having experience on both sides of the glass gives Gus a unique perspective — understanding sound not just as it’s captured, but as it’s played. That connection between performance and production shapes his approach to both music-making and mixing.
He plays two Overwaters: a J5 for punchy, modern sounds in pop and rock contexts, and a Hollowbody for more exploratory, expressive playing in jazz and folk settings. His playing often incorporates melodic and chordal approaches — which his Overwaters handle with nuance and character.
Gus Plays:
Overwater Contemporary J Series 5-string
